On September 9, 1973, Wilma Francis was the first known EMS line-of-duty death recorded in the state of Missouri. She was an LPN for the Caldwell County Ambulance Service of Kingston. She was killed in a motor vehicle accident while transporting a stroke patient to Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Missouri. She was pronounced dead on scene.
