Our Community Service of the Year works with first responders and public health agencies to reduce overdose deaths through coordinating overdose response partnerships.
The team distributes naloxone to trained first responder agencies within hotspot areas across Missouri. EMS is trained to leave behind naloxone with individuals who survive an overdose and their family members or associates. Leave-behind naloxone programs are imperative to further diffuse naloxone access among networks of people who may be actively using drugs or have relationships with individuals who are actively using and are at increased risk for opioid overdose.
To date, this program has provided just under 20,000 leave behind kits, trained 8000 First Responders in Missouri and correlative evidence suggests that the efforts by this group has contributed to a remarkable 23% reduction of opioid fatalities and decreases in overdoses across the state.
