Providing high-quality emergency medical services to the residents and visitors of the hometown of the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, is both an honor and a privilege for American Medical Response (AMR).

Located just east of Kansas City, Independence is the largest suburb on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area and a vibrant community of approximately 123,000 residents. The city is home to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, the president’s home and burial site. Sports enthusiasts know the area well, as it sits just minutes from Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. The community is also served by Centerpoint Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center and Level I STEMI and Stroke Center.

AMR is part of the Global Medical Response (GMR) family of companies, the nation’s largest air and ground medical transport provider. With more than 34,000 team members nationwide, GMR is dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and medical transport services across the country.

A Trusted Community Partner

AMR began providing both 911 emergency and non-emergency services to Independence and Sugar Creek in 1995. Today, AMR serves the communities of Independence, Sugar Creek, Riverside, and the South Platte Ambulance District.

AMR Independence employs 108 team members, including 49 paramedics and 59 EMTs. Operating out of 23 ambulances and three advanced life support (ALS) quick response vehicles, the team utilizes a flexible system status management deployment model and transports more than 22,000 patients annually.

Through a tiered response system, AMR deploys a strategic mix of Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances alongside ALS quick response vehicles. This model ensures that the appropriate level of care is dispatched based on the acuity of each call, optimizing both patient outcomes and system efficiency.

To further enhance patient care, AMR works in close partnership with the Independence Fire Department. The department operates 10 fire stations, staffs 15 apparatus, and includes 190 dedicated EMTs and paramedics who serve as first responders on EMS calls. This collaborative approach strengthens emergency response capabilities throughout the city.

Advanced Communications and Clinical Excellence

These professionals answer both emergency and non-emergency calls, utilizing structured call screening and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) algorithms to determine the most appropriate response.

The integration of the ProQA dispatch platform with AMR’s tiered response model has proven highly effective in aligning resources with patient acuity, ensuring timely and efficient care delivery.

Leadership Rooted in Experience

AMR Independence is led by Operations Manager Paul Lininger, who brings over 38 years of EMS experience to the organization. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as a flight paramedic, firefighter-paramedic, assistant chief of EMS, and held numerous leadership roles.

Lininger began his career in Independence working as a paramedic for Gold Cross Ambulance, the private ambulance service that previously served the city.

“I feel like my career has come full circle,” Lininger shares. “Beginning my career in Independence, and one day ending my career serving in Independence. Not too many paramedics get to do that.”

He is supported by a strong leadership team that includes an administrative supervisor, battalion chiefs, clinical education specialists, two mechanics, and an administrative assistant, along with a highly skilled team of EMTs and paramedics.

“We couldn’t do what we do, provide the absolute best patient care, without such a fantastic team,” Lininger says. “We are fortunate to work in an environment that offers the best of both worlds: a high-volume, high-acuity EMS system within a close-knit operation that allows us to interact daily with our team.”

Dr. Calloway Pichette serves as AMR’s Medical Director. A board-certified EMS physician and EMS fellow, Dr. Pichette is also an emergency physician at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Deeply committed to excellence in patient care, she plays an active role in department training, quality improvement initiatives, staff development, and evidence-based protocol advancement. Her hands-on leadership often includes one-on-one conversations with paramedics to support professional growth and clinical performance.

Clinical education, onboarding, and quality assurance initiatives are led by Clinical Education Specialists Matt Ryan and Kristi Butner. As a certified training entity with the State of Missouri, AMR provides comprehensive educational programming, including ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, AMLS, GEMS, and NALS.

Team members receive the continuing education required to maintain licensure, and many hold instructor certifications to further strengthen internal training efforts.

“Watching our team grow clinically is so rewarding,” says Butner. “Our roles allow us to improve the outcomes of more patients than we could ever affect as individual providers.”

AMR Independence paramedics practice under progressive, evidence-based medical protocols. These include standing order pain management, TXA administration, field antibiotics, and ultrasound utilization. Beginning in the second quarter of this year, AMR will also add the administration of whole blood in the prehospital setting.

A New Home for the Future

The future is bright for AMR Independence. In January, AMR Independence moved into a new state-of-the-art headquarters located on South Jackson Circle in Independence. The facility features drive-through ambulance bays, a wash bay, modern administrative offices, a crew room with refreshments, and an upgraded communications center.

The upper level includes dedicated training and education offices, along with spacious training and breakout rooms designed to support continued professional development.

As far as the future of AMR Independence, “We are so honored to be a trusted partner with the community and look forward to providing the very best in patient care utilizing a team of health care professionals that are second to none!” says Paul.
