Paramedics are accountable for responding to all assigned calls in the most appropriate, efficient, and professional manner, providing the highest standards of patient care while maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment. The Paramedic contributes to overall patient care in the areas of patient assessment, treatment, packaging, and transport.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prompt and regular attendance at work.
  • Provide quality patient care utilizing thorough knowledge and appropriate administration of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), PALS / PEPP, (or any of the approved equivalents) and approved medical protocols.
  • Assess and treat with appropriate techniques (resources and equipment), any medical situation while maintaining the highest standard of patient care and professionalism according to current company standards.
  • Must maintain neat and professional appearance at all times in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Maintain the ambulance and equipment in a clean, organized, and response ready mode.
  • Complete all patient care reports in a timely fashion as required by Alameda County EMS for each response with appropriate and complete patient care documentation and billing information.
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other individuals within the community and EMS system.
  • Responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures provided in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Medical Operations Manual, and Code of Conduct.
  • Responsible for maintaining current state and county certifications.
  • Must attend all Continuing Education courses as required.
  • Performs other such duties as may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

·               High School Diploma or Equivalent

·               Current Missouri Paramedic certification

·                Missouri Chauffeur’s driver’s license

·               Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification (or approved equivalent)

·               Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (or approved equivalent)

·               PALS / EPC certification

·               CPR certification

·               Must be at least 21 years of age


Desired Qualifications:

  • A.S. Degree in Emergency Medical Technology
  • National Registry
  • EMS Experience


Physical Requirements:

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; step, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or carry up to 125 pounds and occasionally lift and/or carry up to 200 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

Unimpaired Mobility: Must be able to quickly respond to ambulance, must be able to access patients in difficult terrain, must be able to climb stairs, must be able to work in close and dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients weighing up to 225 pounds.

Physical Abilities: Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions.  Must be able to swim at basic survival level.

Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques, such as bandaging, splinting, establishing an IV, performing  endotrachael intubation and other advanced airway techniques, manual defibrillation, pleural decompression.

Vision: Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles, must have color acuity adequate for determination of skin and blood color.  Must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes.

Hearing: Must be able to hear and understand information provided by patients, family or bystanders; must be able to hear breath sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressures; must be able to differentiate separate conversation in active distracting environments; must be able hear and understand radio traffic when responding with light and sirens.

Speech: Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions, must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations, must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency personnel.

Occupational Safety Risk for Infection Control:

Risk to exposure from blood borne pathogens – High Risk


The candidate will be working regularly with confidential patient and personnel information.  Must have the ability to maintain composure and tact in stressful situations.  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and through radio and telephone communications.  Must possess the ability to demonstrate compassion and a sincere dedication to patient needs, concerns and information confidentiality.
